Pregnancy and STDs
Can pregnant women become infected with STDs?
Yes, women who are pregnant can become infected with the same sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as women who are not pregnant. Pregnancy does not provide women or their babies any protection against STDs. The consequences of an STD can be significantly more serious, even life threatening, for a woman and her baby if the woman becomes infected with an STD while pregnant. It is important that women be aware of the harmful effects of STDs and know how to protect themselves and their children against infection. Read More

I’m Stressed Out
Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the ever increasing demands of life. Surveys show that most Americans experience challenges with stress at some point during the year. In looking at the causes of stress, remember that your brain comes hard-wired with an alarm system for your protection. When your brain perceives a threat, it signals your body to release a burst of hormones to fuel your capacity for a response. This has been labeled the “fight-or-flight” response. Once the threat is gone, your body is meant to return to a normal relaxed state. Unfortunately, the nonstop stress of modern life means that your alarm system rarely shuts off.

Breastfeeding
Welcome to our 6th Newsletter in September.
Childhood obesity is an epidemic. In the US, 1 preschooler in 5 is at least overweight, and half of these are obese. Breastfeeding helps protect against childhood obesity. A baby’s risk of becoming an overweight child goes down with each month of breastfeeding. In the US, most babies start breastfeeding, but within the first week, half have already been given formula, and by 9 months, only 31% of babies are breastfeeding at all. Hospitals can either help or hinder mothers and babies as they begin to breastfeed. The Baby- Friendly Hospital Initiative describes Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding that have been shown to increase breastfeeding rates by providing support to mothers. Unfortunately, most US hospitals do not fully support breastfeeding; they should do more to make sure mothers can start and continue: READ MORE

Chronic Pain
Welcome to our 4th Newsletter in September. We continue our journey into health with:
Chronic Pain
Chronic pain refers to pain that does not improve with time. This pain can affect a specific part of the body, as in low-back pain or headaches, or involve many regions at the same time, as in fibromyalgia or osteoarthritis. Chronic pain is more than a symptom of a disease, illness or injury; it becomes an illness unto itself. Regardless of location or cause, chronic pain causes many people to have difficulty functioning in daily activities. They may experience occupational disability, depression, drug-related complications and diminished quality of life.

How does nutrition connect to health and fitness?
There’s a lot of talk about the different components of food. Whether you’re consuming carbohydrates, fats, or proteins all of them contain calories. If your diet focus is on any one of these alone, you’re missing the bigger picture.
When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight for a lifetime, the bottom line is: Calories Count
